Crime Watch Patrol is an extension of the Neighborhood Crime Watch Program.

When a neighborhood becomes involved in Crime Watch, the Crime Prevention Unit can designate a Crime Watch Patrol Area. A coordinator is established and area residents are then sought for patrol members. The patrol members then attend a mandatory 6 hour Crime Watch Patrol School - the 6 hours are often split between 2 evenings (3 hours each). Upon successful completion of the patrol school, area residents then volunteer their time and vehicles to patrol their neighborhoods and report all suspicious activities to the Police Department.

The City of Richardson supplies patrol members with Crime Watch Patrol Jackets and T-Shirts. Magnetic vehicle Crime Watch Patrol signs are also supplied to increase the visibility of the patrol.

RPD requires that 9 hours of patrol is completed each week - that means if Owens Park gets 20 volunteers, that's just 30 minutes and 2 people "off" each week! That seems pretty manageable when you consider secnario could be the result:
On 11/17/2010, at 10:00am, RPD was dispatched to the area of Cap Rock Dr. and Lawnmeadow Dr. [in Canyon Creek] in reference to two males in a vehicle driving slowly in the area. A patrol Officer located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Both subjects had a criminal history that included burglary. Warrants were found for one individual. Both subjects were arrested and then drugs were found on one of the subjects.

This is a good example of how Neighborhood Crime Watch Patrol can be effective. Watching out for suspicious activity and calling to report it can result in criminals being removed from our neighborhoods. This vehicle was observed driving slowly, circling the area, and was not recognized as being one normally seen in the neighborhood. Considering the time of day and when home burglaries occur, our alert citizen decided to report it. This obviously doesn't always result in an arrest being made, but in this case, these guys won't have an opportunity to commit any crimes.
Of the 5 main neighborhoods in our area (Owens Park, Sherrill Park North & Foxboro, Fairways of Sherrill Park, University Estates North, Yale Park), Owens Park is the only neighborhood without a Crime Watch Patrol - this is an open to door to criminals that we can slam closed! But, we need your help! For more information, please reveiw the brochure and application. Also, check out the Crime Watch Patrol page on the RPD website.

IT IS A MAJOR GOAL FOR OPNA TO LAUNCH A CRIME PATROL UNIT DURING 2011. If you are interested, please contact us. He is collecting applications - once we have 20 interested residents, we will submit our unit to RPD for approval. The training class will then be scheduled.

The Neighborhood Crime Watch Program is a self-help community crime prevention program with the objectives of reducing crime and the opportunity for crime. When neighbors know each other personally, they are more aware of each other's habits and routines. This awareness in turn makes them knowledgeable of peculiarities and unusual events, such as strange cars or persons in the neighborhood. When neighbors know one another, they are more willing to get involved in reporting crime if they think one is taking place. RPD requires a mandatory 40% participation rate within a neighborhood - Owens Park has had an active crime watch program in place for several years.

Update Nov 19, 2010: We are missing a few crime watch signs around the neighborhood - we will be working with RPD to address this issue.

If you need a "Neighborhood Crime Watch" sticker for your window, please contact us. For more information, please review the brochure. Also, check out the Crime Watch page on the RPD website.
