Owens Park Residents:

Following up on my email from this morning, I've just been made aware that Owens Park was hit twice yesterday...
homes were burglarized on Springtree and Woodglen. THAT BRINGS OUR TOTAL TO 3 HOME BURGLARIES THIS MONTH (a home on Victoria was burglarized on March 3). Details are below, but here are important recommendations from RPD Crime Prevention Officer Mike Wieczorek:

- If you arrive home to find anything out of the ordinary like open doors, broken windows, please call 9-1-1 before making entry, for your own safety!
- If you observe anything unusual at a neighbor's house, like open doors, people jumping fences, call 9-1-1.
- Remember to check your doors and windows regularly and make sure they are locked and in good condition!
- If someone comes to your home, always acknowledge you are home!
- Please remain alert to strangers and suspicious activity and call 9-1-1 if see anything! When in doubt, always call!!!

We are already in the process of revitalizing our Block Captain program, but we need more eyes looking out for Owens Park!!! If you were not able to able to attend last night's OPNA General Meeting, please read the presentation, specifically the Safety goals (slides 12-13). If you are interested in filling a Block Captain role or Crime Watch Patrol, please let me know.

If you are not getting OPNA emails, please sign up (OPNA membership not required). IT'S EASY... just click here!

Springtree Cir. - 5:30pm, resident arrived home and discovered his overhead garage door open, interior garage door open, front door open, and patio door open. Several items were missing. Resident advised he had accidentally left the patio door unsecured when he left. Officers check with neighbors and located a witness who said at 2pm, she was walking by the victims home and heard two men talking on the side of the house but did not see them and did not think much of it. Later, at 3:30pm, the same witness said she observed from a window, a suspect jump the fence at her neighbors house, but did not call police. No suspect description or vehicle seen.

Woodglen Dr. - 3:49pm, neighbor observes victim's home with the overhead garage open and the interior garage door open. Area: Yale Park Neighborhood

Follow up information to yesterdays crime alert.

On 03/28/11, Richardson PD responded to the following locations regarding burglary of habitation reports.

16XX Heather Glen Ct.
17XX Arvada Dr.
19XX Harvard Dr.
16XX Richforest Dr.

The offense on Richforest Dr. does not appear to be related to the other three. The suspect(s) on Richforest Dr. broke into a vacant home and removed appliances. The offense could have happened sometime in the past three days between 03/26 and 03/28. No suspect information is available.

With regards to the offenses on Heather Glen Ct., Arvada Dr. and Harvard Dr.; these offenses appear to be related and occurred sometime between 9am and 1pm.

The home on Heather Glen had the front door forced open, no alarm system installed, the dog was discovered loose in the neighborhood by a neighbor who upon returning it, discovered the offense and called 9-1-1.

The home on Arvada had a window left open by the homeowner by accident. The screen for that window was found removed and the dog was found loose by the neighbor. The neighbor started to carry the dog back to the home at 11:56am and observed a black male, approximately 5'08", 170lbs., muscular build, with short black hair, wearing a white collared shirt, black slacks, black dress shoes and black knit gloves exit the front door of the home. The witness observed the suspect walk to the rear of the home and enter a silver 80's or 90's model Chevrolet four door sedan with rust on the rear quarter panel and trunk lid.

The home on Harvard was entered through the front door, no signs of forced entry. The offense was discovered when the homeowner returned home.

Flat screen TV's, computer equipment, jewelry, firearms and cash were among items taken from the locations.

Area: Abrams Rd. and E. Buckingham Rd. (Richland Park neighborhood)

On 03/28/2011 at approximately 11:35am, Officers were dispatched to 4XX Birch Ln. in reference to an attempted burglary of a habitation. The resident advised that at approximately 11:30am […] came to the front door and rang the door repeatedly. Both subjects then went around to the rear of the house. One subject peered into the residence through the rear patio glass door and saw the resident inside. Both subjects then ran and were seen getting into a possibly grey Ford pickup parked on the street (Birch Ln). The subjects then left the area in an unknown direction. The resident initially called a family member who called police for the resident.

A responding officer stopped a vehicle leaving the area with two occupants matching the suspects descriptions. Both suspects were arrested.

A bobcat was spotted around 11:30AM by residents on Victoria Lane (near Yorkshire)... this was quite a surprise to many of us long-time residents of Owens Park!! The City of Richardson Animal Services was consulted - according to David Pitcock, Senior Animal Services Officer (972-744-4480)... There are more bobcats in urban areas than in the wild, but they are very shy animals. They have everything they need - THERE SHOULD BE NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. If it becomes a problem, then a trap can be set. Bobcats feed on rats, mice, squirrels, rabbits and occasionally a cat. Despite what people say, they will not attack small children or feed on dogs.

December 13, 2010 (Email sent to OPNA)

Last week, Owens Park experienced a case of graffiti on our new perimeter screening wall (adjacent to 2200 Shannon) - someone spray-painted on the new brick. Yesterday, we found a much smaller area of spray-paint on the painted wall between Woodcreek and Woodoak (along the Woodglen alley). Additionally, at some point last weekend (Dec 4-5), the Lookout Park pavilion roof was spray-painted. OPNA leadership has spoken to Officer Wieczorek... this is nothing unusual and RPD sees graffiti randomly throughout Richardson - there are no trends or surges in this type of vandalism crime city-wide. HOWEVER, we are seeing a surge in Owens Park! Keep your eyes peeled and report any suspicious activity to the Richardson Police Department!!!

June 20, 2010 (Notification sent to OPNA in June 2010 Pony Express - June 21)
Well, it seems that the vehicular burglaries made their way into Owens Park. Hopefully, the email sent on June 14th spared several incidents when we were hit on June 15th. Again, this is almost always a crime of opportunity - please make sure you are following the tips below to make sure this does not happen to you!

June 13, 2010 (Email sent to OPNA)

Continuing my June 6 post, there were 2 more vehicular burglaries in surrounding areas last week - 1 in Sherrill Park North & Foxboro and 1 in Spring Park. Additionally, we may have had a thwarted attempt in Owens Park - I am confirming with RPD. Be sure to read the preventative measures below - we can all do our part to keep Owens Park crime free!!!

June 6, 2010

While there has been no crime in Owens Park for over 2 months, surrounding neighborhoods have been experiencing a large number of motor vehicle burglaries... on May 22, 2 vehicles were burglarized in University Estates North and on June 2, 5 vehicles were burglarized in Sherrill Park North & Foxboro. Details can be found in the "Reporting" section above - see emails.

There are several things you can do to prevent this from happening in Owens Park - more often than not, vehicular burglary is a "crime of opportunity":-

1. Park in your garage if possible and don't forget to keep the garage door closed. If you must park on the street, try to park in a well-lit area. If you must park in your driveway, consider installing a motion-sensing security light.
2. Lock ALL your vehicle doors and take ALL valuables with you. If you must leave valuable items in your vehicle, place items out of sight before reaching your home or move them inconspicuously. Don't forget to take your garage door opener with you!
3. Remove traces of valuables - don't leave items like docking stations and connector cables in plain sight.
4. Set your alarm or other anti-theft device. Don't use "hide-a-keys" - thieves know the best places to hide those.

Finally, don't forget to mark your valuables by inscribing / engraving a personal identifier such as your driver's license state and number (don't use your SSN). This won't prevent the crime, but the chances of being reunited with your recovered stolen valuables is significantly increased. REMEMBER, the police cannot prosecute a criminal if they cannot prove the items have been stolen.

February 24, 2010

Here in Richardson, as in the rest of the country, crime is up. Owens Park is no exception, and in the last six months we have regrettably experienced a substantial increase in three areas: Motor Vehicle Theft, Motor Vehicle Burglary, and Residential Burglary. In our neighborhood 86% of reported crime came from these three activities. We have had a little vandalism making up the rest of the reported crime. The good news is that these three criminal activities are ones we can do something about the easiest and most effectively. The formula established by the Richardson Police is as follows:

1. Keep your vehicles locked, keep your garage doors down, and keep your doors locked. Use your peep hole in the door and do not open it to anyone you do not know. The majority of these crimes are not break-ins, but crimes of opportunities from easy access.

2. Get to know your neighbors and be familiar with their lives, including cars, work hours, kids, guests, vacations, and habits. This does not mean snooping and peering from windows. Get out there and meet each other and be neighborly. That's all it takes.

3. Be constantly aware of suspicious activity in Owens Park. We have a diverse community, but seeing cars that you are not familiar with driving slowly and people walking in the alleys that you have not seen before are actions Richardson Police want us to report so they can have a presence here.

Watch this web site for updates from the RPD concerning actionable events that are taking place in Richardson and around here that are causes for prudent behavior on our part. Our Block Captain program is at the heart of an effective program. We are working to establish Block Captains throughout Owens Park to help spread information and be conduits for knowing the people immediately around us. If you are interested in finding out about helping as a Block Captain, click here.
