Event Recap by Maitri Smithhisler (Apr 5, 2010)

Folks,

I wanted to thank everyone who participated in last weekend's OPNA Trash Bash and picnic (photos). It was our biggest turnout ever. We collected over eight large bags of garbage and four bags of recycling. Our most interesting piece of garbage prize was awarded for a pair of underwear! (We won't say where that was found!) Over 15 neighbors participated to help keep our neighborhood clean and to learn more about what we can recycle. Remember, by taking an active role in recycling, we can reduce the amount of trash handled by transfer stations (including Lookout!) and prevent filling up our landfills with unnecessary trash. For those of you that couldn't attend, here are some recycling tips and upcoming Lookout Trash Transfer Station opportunities:

1.
Lookout Trash Facility Public Forum with City Council (May 3rd 6:30PM at City Hall)
This is the citizens' greatest opportunity to interact with council hear their options on the Memo of understanding that the City is currently negotiating with the the North Texas Municipal Water District on our behalf.

2.
Add your name to support our list of Neighborhood Protections for the Lookout Transfer Station Rebuild & Expansion
Visit http://www.protectrichardson.org/lots to add your name - be sure to pass on this link to your other Richardson neighbors to sign on.

3. Recycle your "Hard to Recycle Items" (April 24 at Fretz Park, 6990 Beltline Road)
Recycle electronics, tires, all plastics, Styrofoam, plastic bags, bubble wrap and peanuts, used cooking oil and more! Please no chemicals, paint or building supplies. For more info, call 214-670-4475.

4. Recycle every Friday
You can recycle any of these items every Friday in your blue bags... Tin and aluminum cans (no foil), plastic bottles with number 1,2,3,4,5,7 (no 6), glass (any color), paper and cardboard. Visit Recycle Richardson for more information.

Thanks!
Maitri

Event Recap (by Karen Cargile)
With cool but not cold temperatures, we had a great turnout of about 30-35 neighbors. Everyone met at the Owens Terminus for some hot chocolate, cookies and socializing - it was great seeing so many new faces and children! We all loaded up for the hayride and headed off for an evening of caroling and looking at holiday decorations. We wound our way over to Victoria and Yorkshire - thanks to the Smithhisler's for loaning us their corner! After more hot chocolate, cookies and socializing - you can never have too much - we continued the hayride and caroling back to the Owens Terminus. I sure hope you agree that it was a fun evening for all! I've already got some great ideas on how to make it even more fun next year. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

Approximately 25 residents teamed up to clean up Owens Park! After chatting with neighbors over a McDonald's breakfast, the group scattered... scouring Owens Park for recyclables and trash... 10 bags worth and some other random items!!! For turning in our trash at City Hall, Owens Park received 6 five-foot Red Oak trees... we are planning to use these to start our own Tree the Town planting - stay tuned for more info! Thanks to Karen and Katherine Cargile for organizing and hosting a very successful event! Check out the pics on OPNA's Facebook Page!
